PSALM 91 EXPLAINED BY PASTOR CHRIS OYAKHILOME

PSALM 91 EXPLAINED BY PASTOR CHRIS OYAKHILOME

In a day and an hour where there is so much trouble around the world, so many crisis, destruction, devastation and death. And many are thinking, is there hope? does God protect? does he take care of us? Can we trust him to take care of us especially knowing the kind of things that are happening around the world? Can he be speedy to rescue us ?

PSALM 91 EXPLAINED BY PASTOR CHRIS OYAKHILOME

I want to share this with you from psalm 91 beginning from verse one;

1. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
3. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
4. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
5. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
6. Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
8. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
9. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the highest, thy habitation;
10. There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
11. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

12. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
13. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
14. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

This is an extraordinary piece and here you have interwoven the anointed words of the psalmist and prophetic utterance from the spirit of God and all this put together like this.

He says he that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the almighty. He’s talking about where you are in the spirit.

Do you dwell in the secret place of the most high? He says anyone who dwells there shall abide under the shadow of the almighty. That means under the cover and protection of the almighty.

Where is the secret place of the most high?

Verse 2 says “I will say of the lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in him will i trust ” That means he himself is that secret place. God is that secret place.
So dwelling in the secret place of the most high means dwelling in God.
In the new testament Paul puts it this way, “if any man be in Christ he is a new creation”
Christ is that secret place, Christ is that dwelling place, to be in Christ is to be in that dwelling place. When you are in Christ the lord is your refuge.

Verse 3 is a sovereign declaration
He says “Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler and from the noisome pestilence”. He rescues you from every trap and protects you from the fatal plague, that’s what his talking about.

In verse 4 he says “He shall cover thee with his feathers and under his wings shall thou trust, his truth shall be thy shield and buckler”. This speaks of his protection.

Verse 5. “Thou shall not be afraid of the terror by night or of the arrow that flieth by day”
Whether it’s the night time or day time he takes care of you. Notice the language, the wording here is very significant.
In verse 3 and 4 he tells you what God shall do. However in verse 5 he says “thou shall not be afraid of the terror by night”. He didn’t say don’t let yourself be afraid, he says you shall not be afraid.
So how do you respond?
you respond by saying yes sir! I shall not be afraid of the terror by night.

There’s terror in the night, there’s a lot of wickedness that is carried out at night, there is so much destruction also in the daytime. he says you wont need to be afraid of the dark anymore nor fear the dangers of the day.

He didn’t say there are no dangers in the day time, however he says you shall not fear the dangers of the day.
Why? because he already told you he takes care of you, you dwell in the secret place of the most high, you abide under his cover, he says he spreads his feathers, his wings to cover you.

Though thousand fall at your side or ten thousand is dying around you, they shall not come near you. He didn’t say nothing will happen on your right hand or your left. He says there’s so much evil, there’s so much trouble, there’s so many crisis around you, on your left hand and your right, but what’s important is that it shall not come nigh thee.

It’s like what he said “though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death i fear no evil for thou are with me thy rod and thy staff comfort me”

Only with thy eyes shall you behold and see the reward of the wicked He says you will see the reward of the wicked with your eyes

Then the language changes in the ninth verse “Because thou has made the lord which is my refuge”

Remember in the second verse David said “ i will say of the lord he is my refuge and my fortress”

Is that your confession? You ought to say the same thing David was super naturally protected during his day, the lord took care of him, he was protected from all his enemies and he was giving his testimony of God.

Would you say of the lord he is my refuge and fortress or are you going to say; I don’t know why you are not taking care of me.I don’t know why you are not intervening. I don’t why you are not doing something about it.

I hope you will do something.I hope you are seeing all this.

Are you going to say he is my refuge and my fortress when you face crisis or are you going to be afraid?

The lord the most high is your habitation, he is your dwelling place. If you have made him your dwelling place there shall no evil befall you neither shall any harm come near thy dwelling

He shall give his Angel’s charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways. They are under instruction to attend to you.

They shall bear the up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. You may not feel that they are doing that but he is letting you know how close they are, how they are taking care of you.

You may say, I have not been experiencing it like this, maybe not, because you haven’t made this your confession

“Thou shall tread upon the lion and the harder the young lion and dragon shall you trample under foot” he’s saying you will walk over dangerous things and have no fear of them

In verse 14 it’s not the psalmist talking anymore its God talking
He says Because he hath set his love upon me therefore will I deliver him, I will set him on high because he has known my name”

Have you set your love upon God? He says if you set your love upon God this is the result.-therefore will I deliver him, i will set him on high

This is something you have to claim for yourself knowing that you have set your love upon God

“He shall call upon me and I will answer him I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him”

With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation”

God doesn’t only deliver you, he honours you, you don’t just come out of trouble and say thank God am out of trouble he will honour you.

These are the words of God and you can trust it.

That becomes your testimony, that becomes your solid front.

He says he will satisfy you with long life and show you his salvation, but first you have to accept this, you have to make it your declaration. You have to accept that he is close enough and that his word is dependable.

You have got to become bold about your life in Christ because he is your shield.
Let this be your confession.
