IMPORTANT TRAVEL PLANNING TIPS FROM AN IMPORTANT TRAVELLER

1: Keep Everything Flexible

When booking for your trip abroad, avoid having your mind fixated on any particular hotels to stay in or any particular resort to visit. Of course, you must have a fair idea of places you may want to see, but try to keep it flexible. Make up your mind to see everything. Be open to a last-minute change of plans when you are on holiday, and be determined to have fun no matter what happens. This is one sure way to have fun while vacationing abroad.

2: If it’s Foreign, Learn the Language

Not the entire language! It’s nearly impossible to learn the entire language in a couple of days anyway but pick up a few simple phrases. You can start learning, even before you go on your trip. You’ll never know where you might need to communicate in the local language. Simple phrases such as please, hello, nice to meet you, thank you, excuse me, I’m sorry, “I don’t speak French” or whatever the local language is and “can you take a picture of me” are some phrases that would prove to be very helpful during your trip.

If you ever find yourself abroad and unable to communicate with the locals due to a language barrier, don’t get frustrated. You can always use Google translate, or gesticulate.

3: Make Sure Your Internet Banking is Good to Go

Needless to say, you’ll have to spend a lot of money when abroad. If you go abroad and realize you have no access to your bank account, your trip would be ruined. For this reason, you need to set up your internet banking and, make sure that its working fine. Also get an additional ATM card so that if something goes wrong with one card, you can easily switch to a different one. Your bank cards can easily get misplaced, stolen, or swallowed by an ATM, so always have a backup card and keep the backup card safe, so that you are still able to have access to money at all times during your travels.

4. Tell Someone Where You Will be staying

Never have your friends and family at home panicking over nothing. Once you know where you’ll be staying for your holidays, text the address to closest friends and family. This way they would be able to reach you whenever they want to, especially in cases of emergency.
Also consider that in the unlikely event that you get into serious trouble on your trip abroad, it would be easier for friends and family to begin searching for you if they are aware of the places where you were scheduled to stay or visit.
Also, sometimes you may have a dead phone battery, making it impossible for family and friends to reach you. At such times they may start to panic and think something has gone wrong on your trip. If they have the address of your hotel, they would easily just contact the hotel staff to do a check on you, putting their mind at rest.

5. Study the Country

Yes, before you visit a new country, read a good book about it, study its history and culture. It doesn’t have to be an entire textbook; even a little pamphlet or tour guidebook about the country could be useful.
Also, some countries may have sacred customs and traditions; it would be dumb for you to visit such countries without knowing these customs. Many foreigners have gotten in trouble abroad due to ignorance of a country’s traditions. A lot of countries also have areas that are marked unsafe for tourists, you should be aware of these areas so you don’t get into any trouble abroad.

6. Don’t be Scared to Splurge

Holidays do not come around every day, so when you do get a chance to go on one, save up some good money and do not be scared to spend it. Plan to visit the most exciting and fascinating places abroad. Visit the most expensive hotels in the city, and if possible, spend a night in one of the rooms. Eat at the fanciest restaurants in town and have a wild time in the richest parts of the city. However, remember not to spend more than you can afford, as life continues after your holiday.

7. Ear Plugs are not Negotiable

Pack two earplugs or even three when you are packing for your trip. They are not negotiable. You will need them. First to protect your ears from uneven air pressure inside the cabin that makes your ears pop, then from crying babies in the aircraft to all sorts of noisy disturbances that you may encounter on your trip such as barking dogs, street preachers, salesmen.

8. Get a Traditional Outfit

If you are visiting a country that’s known for their kilts, then get yourself a kilt. If they’re known for scarfs and head coverings, then get one for yourself. It’s often fun to dress like the locals, mingle with them and take some pictures. However, you must be wary of indulging in any cultural appropriation.

9. Do Not Pack Too Much Stuff

It’s the 21st century; it’s possible to purchase anything you need at a store in your destination country. You don’t need all that gear travelling along with you. And you do not need to pay for additional luggage on the way to your destination. On the way back, yes, because of all the souvenirs you might have bought for friends and family at home. However, while headed for your holiday, keep your luggage light, leave all that space for the shopping you’ll do while on your trip. There’s hardly anything you’ll need on your trip that you can’t find in the shops abroad.

10: Pack Your Medications

If you are on any prescription medication, then you already know how important it is that you do not forget them when going abroad. Get enough to last for the period of your trip, so that you would not have to go through the hassle of seeing a doctor abroad. Trying to get your medication abroad might also be expensive seeing as your insurance would not cover the expense. You don’t have to worry about packing OTP medication as you can easily get these across the counter while abroad.
